Dubai has unveiled a landmark initiative set to redefine philanthropy in the region and beyond. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, has launched the Mohammed bin Rashid Endowment District, an AED4.7 billion ($1.28 billion) development designed to generate sustainable funding for humanitarian projects worldwide.
The ambitious project, the first endowment district of its kind in the region, is being developed under the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI) with the support of Azizi Developments. Spanning more than 2 million square feet, the district brings together housing, healthcare, and education facilities in one integrated urban community—an innovative model for sustainable philanthropy.
A Vision of Endowments as Engines of Giving
Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the transformative role of the initiative:
“Today, we launched the Mohammed bin Rashid Endowment District as a leading endowment project that brings together healthcare, education, and housing facilities. Our aim is for it to serve as an urban model that embodies our vision of endowments as a tool that multiplies the value of giving and leaves a lasting impact on people’s lives.”
He described the district as a symbol of compassion, generosity, and solidarity that aligns with the UAE’s ethos, adding that it reflects Dubai’s vision of charitable work as a strategic driver of sustainable development.
District Features
The development will include:
- 25 endowment buildings with over 2,000 residential units
- A 250-bed hospital with capacity to handle 90,000 cases annually
- A medical college and two schools accommodating 5,000 students
- Housing for medical staff and training facilities for healthcare professionals
- Green spaces, a boulevard, mosque, and thousands of parking spaces
Upon completion, the district will welcome more than 12,000 residents and visitors daily, supported by modern infrastructure and amenities.
Ensuring Continuous Humanitarian Funding
The revenues from its residential, healthcare, and educational assets will be reinvested to sustain MBRGI’s global programmes, particularly in education and healthcare. This ensures a continuous flow of funding for charitable initiatives, enabling Dubai to support humanitarian causes on a long-term, sustainable basis.
AED330 million ($89.8 million) of the project’s investment has come from a group of investors, while profits will be reinvested into maintaining the district’s humanitarian mission.
Redefining Philanthropy
Mohammad Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Secretary-General of MBRGI, said the district sets a benchmark for future projects:
“The launch of the Mohammed bin Rashid Endowment District reflects His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision to redefine charitable and humanitarian work by centring it on endowment investment to drive development and empower people in all aspects of life.”
He noted the initiative will have a lasting impact in supporting global healthcare and education, enhancing the efficiency of humanitarian work.
Private Sector Contribution
The project also highlights the role of the private sector in advancing sustainable philanthropy. Azizi Developments, led by Founder and Chairman Mirwais Azizi, has played a key role in bringing the project to life. The company also contributed AED3bn ($816.8m) to the Fathers’ Endowment campaign, marking the largest private-sector donation in UAE history.
Azizi said:
“We are proud to be part of this pioneering endowment project. The Mohammed bin Rashid Endowment District is a milestone in the history of charitable work in the UAE and a model for leveraging real estate investments to serve noble humanitarian goals.”
A Global Model for Sustainable Giving
The district is envisioned as a state-of-the-art urban model aligned with Dubai’s vision for future cities. By blending real estate investment with philanthropic funding, Dubai is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable endowment-based giving—demonstrating how cities can integrate economic growth with lasting social impact.
With this flagship project, Dubai reinforces its role as a hub for humanitarian innovation, ensuring that philanthropy remains not only generous but also sustainable, strategic, and scalable.
