Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), led by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, has announced that its pioneering Green Hydrogen project has produced more than 100 tonnes of green hydrogen since its launch in May 2021. This breakthrough initiative has already generated over 1.15 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity through hydrogen gas engines, effectively reducing more than 515 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Part of the output—over 11 tonnes of green hydrogen—was delivered to ENOC to fuel hydrogen-powered vehicles at the “Service Station of the Future” during Expo 2020 Dubai, in addition to serving other industrial applications.

Al Tayer highlighted that the project embodies the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, supporting national strategies including the UAE’s Net Zero 2050, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030. These frameworks aim to achieve 100% clean energy production capacity by 2050 while enhancing sustainable mobility and air quality.

The project—the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa to produce green hydrogen using solar power—was developed in collaboration with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy. It currently produces around 20 kg of hydrogen per hour, with storage tanks capable of holding 12 hours of production, later used for nighttime power generation via hydrogen gas motors producing up to 300 kilowatts of electricity.

According to the Green Hydrogen Report 2024 by Alvarez & Marsal, the UAE now ranks first globally in green hydrogen competitiveness, reaffirming Dubai’s role as a global leader in the clean energy transition.

This project not only strengthens Dubai’s energy resilience but also opens the door for future hydrogen applications across the energy, transportation, and industrial sectors, placing the UAE firmly at the forefront of sustainable innovation.
