In a historic step that places Hatta at the forefront of sustainable energy projects in the UAE, the pumped-storage hydroelectric plant has begun its trial operations, exporting surplus electricity to Dubai. This long-awaited project represents a qualitative leap in energy security and sustainable diversification.

The plant, with a production capacity of up to 250 megawatts, can store as much as 1,500 megawatt-hours of energy. With a projected lifespan of 80 years, it will serve as a long-term strategic element of the renewable energy system. While peak electricity demand in Hatta is around 39 megawatts, the surplus is directed straight to Dubai.

How Does It Work?

The system starts by storing water in the upper dam, then converts its potential energy into kinetic energy as it flows through a 1.2-kilometer underground tunnel, spinning the turbines to generate electricity in less than 90 seconds. During times of low demand, the water is pumped back up to the upper dam using clean energy from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park—repeating the cycle like a giant natural battery.

Why Does This Matter?

The project not only enhances electricity supply stability but also stands as a cornerstone in achieving Dubai’s 2050 vision, which aims for all energy sources to be local and clean. It is part of wider government efforts to strengthen climate resilience and foster sustainable development.

Nestled in Hatta’s mountainous landscape, the project redefines the relationship between people and nature through eco-friendly engineering. It is one of the clearest steps reflecting an integrated vision of development—balancing industrial progress with environmental harmony.

Turning water into electricity, storing it, and exporting it—this is not science fiction but a living reality in Hatta today. The “pumped-storage” project, brought to life by a team of pioneering engineers, once again proves Dubai’s ability to anticipate the future and turn it into a vibrant present—driven by innovation and foresight.
