Dubai Airports has completed a major accessibility upgrade at Dubai International Airport (DXB) with the installation of more than 520 hearing loops across all three terminals. This rollout is now the largest of its kind in any airport worldwide, designed to enhance the travel experience for people using hearing aids or cochlear implants.
Hearing loops, also known as audio induction loops, allow individuals with compatible hearing devices to receive wireless sound directly, reducing background noise and providing greater clarity. At DXB, these loops have been installed at key locations such as check-in counters, immigration desks, boarding gates, and information points, ensuring that passengers with hearing loss can communicate more easily and confidently.
Globally, over 1.5 billion people live with some degree of hearing loss, a number expected to grow to 2.5 billion by 2050. Dubai Airports’ initiative reflects the emirate’s commitment to inclusivity and aligns with the Dubai Universal Design Code, which calls for public spaces and transport infrastructure to be accessible to people of determination. To complement the new technology, frontline employees have also received training to better assist travelers with hearing difficulties.
The project was delivered in partnership with key stakeholders including Emirates, flydubai, Dubai Police, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, Dubai Customs, dnata, Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, Dubai Taxi Company, and Dubai Duty Free. Careful planning ensured that installation was completed without major disruption to daily operations.
This initiative forms part of Dubai Airports’ broader accessibility strategy, which focuses on creating an inclusive environment through both infrastructure improvements and enhanced services. The aim is to ensure every guest feels welcome and supported at every step of their journey through DXB.
