In a new step reflecting Dubai’s commitment to developing innovative economic models, the Dubai Future Foundation, in collaboration with Amazon UAE, has announced the launch of a pilot program that allows individuals to participate in the gig economy by delivering packages on foot to customers.

This program comes after Amazon signed an agreement to join the Sandbox Dubai initiative under the Dubai Future Foundation, within the gig economy sector, endorsed by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation.

Driving Digital Growth and Flexible Income

The pilot program with Amazon UAE provides individuals and small business owners with flexible opportunities to earn additional income through on-foot delivery services, particularly in densely populated areas of Dubai. It also contributes to utilizing idle working hours and enables businesses to scale more efficiently.

This initiative is in line with Dubai’s forward-looking vision to enhance innovative practices and expand entrepreneurial opportunities.

The program does not only create economic opportunities but also helps reduce dependency on delivery vehicles, thereby easing traffic congestion and lowering carbon emissions—supporting Dubai’s sustainability and environmental protection goals.

Public–Private Collaboration

Ronaldo Mouchawar, Vice President of Amazon Middle East, Africa, and Turkey, emphasized that this initiative reflects the company’s commitment to innovation and delivering flexible solutions that enhance speed and efficiency, while supporting the gig economy and entrepreneurship.
Meanwhile, H.E. Khalfan Belhoul, CEO of Dubai Future Foundation, stressed that this step comes as part of public–private collaboration to develop innovation-friendly regulations, and to launch impactful pilot projects that enhance Dubai’s competitiveness and readiness for the future.

“Sandbox Dubai” as a Testing Platform

It is worth noting that Sandbox Dubai is one of the key transformational projects within Dubai’s Economic Agenda (D33), which aims to double the emirate’s economy within the next decade and cement its position among the world’s top three economic cities.

The platform provides innovators with an ideal environment to test and develop their business models, products, and services in a realistic and safe framework, supported by flexible regulatory supervision and expert guidance. This accelerates market entry while offering accurate data to policymakers for the development of evidence-based regulations that drive sustainable and progressive growth.

The new initiative between the Dubai Future Foundation and Amazon UAE is not just a pilot program, but a strategic step towards redefining last-mile delivery models in smart cities—strengthening the digital economy and reinforcing Dubai’s position as a global hub for innovation and future economy.
